If you are interested in having whiter teeth, because of staining, discolouration or you’d simply like a brighter smile, then teeth whitening may well be for you.
It’s worth noting that teeth whitening is a dental procedure and by law, can only be carried out by qualified dental professionals who can ensure the correct products are used and assess whether it’s right for you – particularly if you have sensitive teeth or gums.
How long does it take?
This will vary dependent on the extent to which you’d like your teeth whitened and the original colour of your teeth. Typically, you can expect to see results in one to two weeks.
What are the main steps?
During your initial visit to your dentist an impression will be taken of your teeth from which a bespoke whitening tray will be made which fits precisely over your teeth. One further visit will be required to ensure that the tray fits correctly and that you are happy with how to use it. You will then continue the treatment at home by applying the product (using the tray) over one to four weeks, for between one and eight hours at a time.
Will it work on my fillings?
Because of the nature of the bleaching agents used, the procedure will not work on fillings (either metal or ceramic), veneers, dentures or crowns.
How long will it last?
Teeth whitening isn’t permanent but the effects are long-lasting. The teeth will gradually darken as your natural teeth would (but from a lighter starting-point), however they will seldom return to their original darker colour. Whitening will usually last from a several months to several years, dependent on the person and their lifestyle and dietary habits. Don’t forget that smoking, drinking lots of tea, coffee and/or red wine will definitely reduce its effectiveness, but whitening is a great way to safely and predictably fight the effects of these!
As ever, we are here to help so don’t hesitate to ask us about tooth whitening next time you ring or call in.
