We’ve noticed a big uplift in interest in tooth whitening over the past few months – it’s been the busiest part of the website recently – and we so thought it might be useful to remind you about whitening; what is it, how does it work and is it safe?
Tooth whitening has consistently been the most popular way to make a noticeable improvement to your smile. It’s fairly simple, (usually) pain-free and relatively low cost. It’s not necessarily for everyone but for most of our clients it presents an easy way to give their teeth a more youthful appearance.
What is it?
Tooth whitening uses simple, clear plastic trays which sit over your teeth to hold a peroxide-based gel against the teeth. The trays are made by taking a mould of your teeth and are a custom-fit meaning they are comfortable and easy to wear.
Most people will wear these trays at night, usually for anywhere between 10 and 14 nights (doesn’t have to be consecutively), whilst a few prefer to wear during the day for shorter periods although this takes longer to achieve a good result.
How does tooth whitening work?
The whitening gel breaks down to release Hydrogen Peroxide, which eliminates staining and discolouration through an oxidising reaction. Everyone’s teeth respond differently, and your dentist will be able to discuss any potential challenges with you.
Is it safe for me?
It’s a very safe product when used correctly under professional supervision. There are one or two situations where tooth whitening might be inadvisable but for the majority of people there should be no concerns. One side effect to be aware of is the possibility of sensitivity from your teeth during the time you are whitening; it is very difficult to predict whether it could be a problem before you start and there are usually ways round it to make things easier. Any sensitivity you may experience will return to normal once you stop whitening.
Our Tooth Whitening costs £344. If you’d like to find out more then visit our Tooth Whitening page or give us a call on 01423 503428.
