Your child’s first visit to the dentist

16th October 2020

We recommend that your child’s first visit to the dentist is when their teeth start to come through but it’s well worth bringing them before this, perhaps when you have an appointment, so that the sights, smells and sounds of the practice become familiar.

When to expect the first teeth

All children are different of course, but you should expect the first milk tooth at around 6 months and for all 20 to have appeared by 24 months. From the age of 6 or 7 the first adult teeth will start to come through and the baby teeth will begin to fall out.

The examination

Your dentist will advise on what the first examination will include, but generally it’s an opportunity for a quick look inside the mouth and crucially, a chance to sit in the big chair!

Check-ups

After the first visit, please ensure that your child has regular 6 month check-ups – this is as important for little ones as it is for adults and of course, no matter how many teeth have appeared, do clean them twice daily and limit the sugary treats!
