5 Signs Your Dental Crown Needs Replacing

16th July 2025

Dental crowns are a reliable and long-lasting solution for restoring damaged or weakened teeth. However, like any dental restoration, they don’t last forever. While crowns typically last 10–15 years or more, there are times when they may need replacing sooner. At Coppice View Dental Care in Harrogate, we help patients recognise the signs early to avoid further complications.

1. Your Crown Feels Loose or Wobbly

A crown should feel secure, just like a natural tooth. If yours moves slightly when you eat or brush, it could indicate that the cement has worn down or there’s an issue beneath the crown. A loose crown can let bacteria in and lead to decay of the underlying tooth.

2. Pain or Sensitivity Around the Crown

Some mild sensitivity after crown placement is normal, but if you’re experiencing persistent pain or temperature sensitivity months or years later, it may be a sign of:

  • Receding gums exposing the tooth underneath

  • A fracture in the crown or tooth

  • Decay beneath the crown

This discomfort shouldn’t be ignored—especially if it’s worsening over time.

3. Visible Wear or Cracks

Crowns are strong, but over years of chewing and grinding, they can begin to show signs of wear. Tiny cracks or chips might not be painful at first but can grow and eventually cause structural failure. A damaged crown may also impact your bite and neighbouring teeth.

4. Your Gums Are Receding or Inflamed

If you notice the gum around your crown pulling back or becoming red and swollen, it could signal that the crown no longer fits properly or there is plaque buildup. This can lead to gum disease if not addressed. An ill-fitting crown may need to be replaced to protect both your tooth and surrounding gum tissue.

5. A Change in Your Bite

Over time, crowns can wear unevenly or shift slightly, causing changes in how your teeth come together. If your bite feels “off” or you’re developing jaw discomfort or headaches, it may be time to assess whether your crown is still functioning properly.

What to Do Next

If you’re noticing any of these signs, the best course of action is to book a check-up at our Harrogate clinic. We can assess your crown, take X-rays if needed, and advise whether repair or replacement is the right step.
