A Purple revolution or just PAP?

23rd October 2023

Social media is, for many, the go-to authority on all things health-related. If you’re a regular SM user you will probably already have seen the growth in online marketing for “whitening” products. There’s a new wave of toothpastes and whitening products that claim to whiten teeth effortlessly and at relatively low cost. So is it worth it? Well……

We’re all for innovation in the dental market but unfortunately these products are another red herring. Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid products (or PAP for short) claim to whiten the teeth without using the tried and tested hydrogen peroxide. Several companies are offering products at relatively low cost which claim to improve tooth colour, but we’d definitely advise caution here.

Science and research support hydrogen peroxide as the well-established, safe and predictable way to improve the colour of your teeth. Carried out under supervision of a dental professional you should be able to improve your smile at relatively modest cost (whitening is usually anywhere between £300-£500). The online products aren’t usually overly expensive, but given their almost-zero benefit, they still don’t represent good value

As ever, if you are curious about anything dental-related, the first place to start is always your dental professional. We’re always happy to chat through latest developments in the ever-expanding dental market and here to help you achieve the smile you want.
