Holidays and your dental health

28th July 2023

As summer has arrived it’s worth reflecting on what that might mean for your dental health. Here’s a quick summary of things to consider as you get ready for your trip away.

Toothbrush
We’d like to think it’s the first thing in everyone’s bag – if you normally use an electric brush but are taking a manual while you are away, make sure you are using it thoroughly on every tooth surface. For some people, manual brushes aren’t as effective as electric ones, so look out for more bleeding when you return home. A week or two away from your normal routine shouldn’t make a big difference but make sure you work really hard on your brushing and interdental cleaning when you get back. If you’re away on a longer trip, consider taking your electric brush (and charger) with you.

Interdental cleaning
It doesn’t matter whether you’re home or away, you should still be using your floss or interdental brushes regularly. Luckily they take up very little space.

Your diet
It’s a holiday so it’s likely your diet might be different to your usual routine. If you’re only away for a shorter period, it’s unlikely to have a big impact on your teeth but think twice about frequency (how many times in a day you have something to eat or drink). If you spend your days snacking/sipping sweet or acidic drinks then don’t be surprised if you notice more sensitivity, or that a previously minor issue becomes a bigger problem. Whilst it’s great to treat yourself, consider whether you really do want that extra sugary drink or snack.

Sensitivity
Teeth don’t like really cold stuff. If you have an ice-cream or an iced drink and it’s feels very cold, don’t be too surprised. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have a serious problem. Sensitivity is usually made worse by acidity (so lots of fruit, soft or alcoholic drinks for example). Sensitive toothpastes can be helpful to reduce this type of sensitivity.

Dental emergencies
If you have a lot of crowns or fillings, it might be worth packing a dental emergency travel kit. These contain temporary filling materials which can be used (with varying success) to patch up broken teeth or temporarily refix crowns or bridges. Check your holiday insurance to see if dental problems are covered. If you have a Denplan membership, it’s likely you will have emergency dental cover included but check with your dentist if you’re unsure.

If you experience problems with your teeth while you’re away, consider whether it’s as a result of something different you’ve been doing (or not doing). Try to revert to your usual home routines with cleaning/diet and see if things improve.

As ever, we’re here to help so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’ve any dental issues or queries.
