Why it’s important to visit your dental hygienist

24th June 2016

Following on from our last blog about keeping on top of gum health, we thought it would be helpful to provide a bit more information about the role of the dental hygienist and how regular oral hygiene visits could significantly improve the health of your mouth.

Dental hygienists are specially trained in all aspects of oral hygiene, including the prevention and treatment of gum disease which can cause bad breath, bleeding, painful gums or even loose teeth. They work as an integrated part of your dental team and will have full access to your notes and details of your dental history.

Dental hygienists can offer personalised advice on how to keep your mouth really healthy, how best to brush and clean your teeth and how to avoid the build-up of plaque. Additionally, they can help with stopping smoking as well as provide guidance on diet and nutrition. Some hygienists can also carry out procedures such as teeth whitening and stain removal.

How often you visit the hygienist will largely depend on your specific needs and the recommendation of your dentist or dental hygienist, but did you know you can also visit our hygienist without having seen a dentist first? We are able to offer appointments directly with Emma or Amy our hygienists and you don’t even need to be a registered patient at the practice. Speak to any of our team here at Coppice View to find out more.
