What age will my kid’s teeth appear?

23rd July 2024

A question we’re often asked is at what age children’s teeth appear or be lost.

There are no hard and fast rules as to the precise timings (we’re all different!), but we’ve put together a diagram which will hopefully give you a good indication of what to expect for each type of tooth. This starts with when a child’s first (deciduous”) teeth might appear (erupt) and then roughly when they might be lost (“exfoliate”) and be replaced by an adult (“permanent”) tooth.

Sometimes things take longer or happen more quickly, but usually the same sequence is followed If the timings are out, but the sequence is normal then you can be pretty sure all is fine. If things are appearing in a very different order to the diagram below then it might be worth speaking to your dentist for advice.

It’s worth bearing in mind that (particularly in the first six years) we are unlikely to want to (or be able to) do much to change what happens, but if we think something is a little out of sequence this may have some impact on longer-term planning.

If you have any queries about what’s happening with your child’s teeth then please give us a call, we’ll be delighted to help. Don’t forget, some kids don’t always want to give us a really great look at things when they come in, so a photo on your phone at a time when they’re relaxed can be really helpful too.
