A composite or ‘white’ filling is an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional amalgam (metal) filling. Made from a resin mixture, it has a neutral colour and so, in most instances, is virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth. We often prefer to use these fillings as they bond to the existing tooth structure and reduce the risk of the tooth breaking further, compared to traditional metal fillings.
You will usually find that composites cost a little more than amalgam fillings as they involve a more precise placement procedure. In some instances they may not be quite as durable, though this of course depends on the individual case. As new composite materials develop, they are delivering improved results that are proving to be comparable to their metal counterparts. For particularly large cavities we often recommend more durable CEREC ceramic fillings.
We usually recommend that a filling is changed only when the old one needs to be replaced but a chat with your dentist will help identify what will work best for you.
